When logging in to the PIA systems for the first time you will need to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This is a usual business practice in Australia to keep data safe.
Doing this only on a phone will cause problems as you will need to see two things at once. Use your laptop, a computer on campus or at a library.
To start:
- Download the Microsoft authenticator onto your phone:
- On your Android device, go to Google Play to download and install the Authenticator app, or
- On your Apple iOS device, go to the App Store to download and install the Authenticator app
- Once installed open the app and follow the instructions shown on the screen.
When you have the authenticator set up, on your laptop or computer:
- log in to outlook.office.com
- follow the steps on the screen
The computer/laptop steps are described in the video but once you have gone to outlook.office.com what you will need to do is:
- Enter your student email address - this is your student number followed by @student.pia.edu.au .
- Enter the password emailed to you by PIA.
- Change your password by entering the password emailed to you and then entering a new password twice.
- Provide further information to set up the Multi-Factor Authentication. Do NOT select "Ask Later" do it now.
On your phone
- Open the Microsoft authenticator.
- Press the + button on the authenticator to create a new account.
- Select Work or school account for the question "What kind of account are you adding".
- Select Scan a QR code.
- Using the authenticator app scan the QR code on the laptop or computer screen.
- Enter the number on the laptop or computer screen into the authenticator when prompted.
On the computer/laptop
